Hafjell!
Situated near the 1994 Winter Olympics city of Lillehammer, Hafjell is the most developed ski resort for freeride and downhill mountain-biking in Norway. With the owner of the ski resort having lived in Colorado, USA, the local lodge manager an avid mountain-biker who runs the freeride club, and a veteran downhill racer with a talent for seeing and making trails working together, there’s no surprise that the trails at Hafjell are quality.
2006 is the third year of trail building and there are 3 main trials:
Downhill racing: Starts at the top of the third lift, but since this lift is not in everyday use, the top is often left out. This is the first creation, and with it’s deep berms, wooden step-downs and stoney singletrack this is the most difficult of the three main trails. It’s fast and technical and perfect for tuning those downhill racing skills. Any one can ride it, but can you ride it fast?!?
Bulderløypa (Bulderrr-loeypa - Rumble-trail): Is the freeride trail. It starts from the top of the second chair-lift and is full of jumps, hips, and drops. It has an enormous wall-ride (left-right, ca L.7m, H.4m) and an even bigger North Shore drop (ca.7m effective height). Bulder is the most popular trail at Hafjell and this year is being continued all the way to the bottom lift. This one will have you riding section by section looking for new lines and showing off to anyone riding there.
Gressløypa (Grrress-loeypa - Grass-trail): is a windy singletrack trail that snakes its way down from the wall-ride in Bulder. It is a smoother trail than the others, but is quite challenging as you have to pump the corners and bumps or you won’t make it to the bottom without dabbing. This is a trail that is to be ridden at speed!
From the mid-station down there are two main trails: The tractor “road” this is the access trail for the local farmers and is fast as you dare, but beware of the drainage ditches and fences! and the end of the Bulderløypa - more berms and tables. At the bottom there are some jump-boxes built up just to get the last air before getting on the chair-lift again. Hafjell crew are creating more trails for mountainbikers, so watch this space!
