Door de regen is de finale van de Monster Park slopestyle uitgesteld. Als het weer goed is wordt vandaag (maandag) de finale alsnog gereden.
Monster Park Postponed
Mother Nature be damned, the contest will run on Monday
Amid heavy action at Bike Magazine’s Monster Park slopestyle contest, a clear winner emerged—the dude with the black hat. Intermittent rains throughout the day rendered the course too slick and muddy for riding and forced the event to be postponed until tomorrow, August 21. But riders and fans used the opportunity to host a few mud sliding contests of their own with kids, locals and even a few cute blondes jumping in on the action.
The day started off promising and even though rains the previous night soaked the course, it had dried by noon. Riders who rode conservatively in qualifying rounds began throwing huge tricks to prepare for the finals. Jamie Goldman let loose a giant backflip off the imposing step down leading into the course. Darren Berrecloth was finding his groove on the 20-foot gap off the judge’s towers and McCaul was working on an arsenal of big tricks lower on the course. Maybe in an ominous sign of impending rains, Kurt Sorge cased the landing coming off the judge’s tower, smashing his shoulder into the dirt and possibly breaking his clavicle.
When the rains began to fall with purpose, riders waited under the Red Bull pyramid tent at the top of the course, hoping that the skies would clear and the course would dry. To pass time, they staged giant mud slides on the rain-slick dirt. Urged on by the riders, a handful of fans spent the afternoon diving headfirst into the mud, winning some nice swag from Kona and Maxxis. The dirty scene was briefly cleaned up by the appearance of a few cute blondes, but they too joined the sloppy goodness and stunned the crowd by heaving themselves headfirst into the mud.
With the rain refusing to let up, the event was called off at 4 p.m., and riders slowly made their way back to their hotel rooms, discouraged but mostly eager to start the competition on Monday.
